Manuscript Submissions

Abingdon Press provides resources that meet the needs of all those who seek and would serve God. We produce and deliver hundreds of thousands of resources that people want and use for their ministries. Among these products are books, supply items, music resources, curriculum resources, and a host of other print and non-print media, including audio and video cassettes, computer software, and periodicals such as Circuit Rider and Newscope.

Most of our book publishing is done on a royalty basis: The author is paid a percentage of the retail price of copies sold. We assume the expense of editing, printing, binding, advertising, and promotion and in most cases, we arrange for illustration. Through our own sales personnel, we distribute to retail bookstores those books published under our imprint. We also handle subsidiary rights as well as foreign sales and translation rights.

All curriculum writing is done by assignment. Curriculum writers are active members of The United Methodist Church and are often involved in the age level for which they write.

We suggest that an author first submit for consideration an outline or description of the writing plan together with one or two sample chapters. Because of the time and expense involved in the appraisal process, manuscripts should be submitted to only one publisher at a time.

The author should retain a copy of any unsolicited material submitted, since Abingdon Press cannot assume responsibility for the receipt, security, or return of such material. Correct postage should accompany the manuscript in the event it must be returned. The author should provide only one address--the one to which correspondence regarding the submission is to be sent.

Careful attention is given to every project submitted. All editorial considerations take place at 201 Eighth Avenue South, P.O. Box 801, Nashville, TN 37202-0801.

Music Submissions

The Abingdon Press music publishing program produces sacred choral and instrumental music as well as books and supplies. We have published a variety of collections, musicals, music resource books, and worship-planning resources, also Church Music Workshop, a periodical that focused on the practical needs of the church musician and offers several sacred music works in each issue. Currently we publish primarily choral anthems and worship song collections.

Some material is purchased outright, some on a royalty basis in which the author or composer is paid a percentage of the retail price of all copies sold. In all cases, Abingdon Press obtains ownership of the copyrights. Abingdon Press assumes the expense of editing, printing, binding, advertising, and promotion; and in most cases, we arrange any necessary graphics. On the retail level we distribute our material through Cokesbury stores, catalogs, and direct mail. On the wholesale level, we are represented by the Theodore Presser Company, which distributes our material to music stores and workshops.

We are interested in reviewing a variety of music, although our focus is on small- and medium-sized choirs. All music received by us is given careful consideration for possible publication by a group of musicians and editors. If we do not find an appropriate place for the music, it is generally returned to the sender.

We suggest that authors/composers submit music manuscripts with recordings of the material if possible (the recording does not have to be produced in a professional recording studio). Name and address should be attached to both the manuscript and the recording.  Submissions via the Internet are accepted for review.

The normal review time is 4 to 6 weeks from the time we receive the material. For further information or to submit material to be considered for publication, please contact:
